Met Office in warning over snow

17 February 2012 Last updated at 21:00 GMT Snow plough Motorists have been advised to check the roads before heading out Blizzards could batter parts of Scotland at the weekend as forecasters warned of high wind and snow.

The Met Office issued yellow "be aware" snow warnings in Orkney and Shetland, the Highlands, Grampian, Strathclyde, Tayside, Fife and central Scotland.

Severe conditions could hit from 09:00 on Saturday, and continue until midnight.

Police have asked motorists to check conditions and routes before taking to the roads.

The Met Office also warned of ice in Strathclyde, south west Scotland and Lothian and Borders on Saturday and Sunday.

Snow of between between 2in (5cm) and 6in (15cm) is expected for northern and western coastal fringes.

"Snow showers will become frequent and heavy at times over much of northern and north west Scotland, including the Grampians, during Saturday," said the Met Office.

"In addition, gale-force winds will result in temporary blizzard conditions and drifting over higher ground.

"The public should be aware that this is likely to cause disruption."
